San José Oriol Baslica
One of the most outstanding works from the last period of Enric Sagnier’s career is the basilica dedicated to the Barcelonese saint Josep Oriol. In his earlier churches, the architect had used elements from a neo-Gothic repertoire, which from the mid-19th century were considered to be the most appropriate for a Christian place of worship; occasionally he also had recourse to very freely interpreted neo-Romanesque forms. In contrast, in this building Sagnier used for the first time the basilical layout derived from the Paleochristian tradition and, as was the case in such buildings in Roman times, the interior is enriched with mosaics, in this instance by Lluís Bru. As well as the church, the complex—completed by Sagnier’s son Josep Maria—included a parish centre with a small auditorium (Villarroel, 87) and schools (Villarroel on the corner with Consell de Cent). After the Spanish Civil War, the church, which had been set on fire and severely damaged, was the object of a fairly respectful restoration by the architect Francesc Folguera.
