Dolors Vidal de Sagnier house
Five years after his marriage to Dolors Vidal, Sagnier set about designing and building the family home, in the Rambla de Catalunya in central Barcelona, where a number of his most outstanding buildings can also be found. The contemporary publication Arquitectura Moderna de Barcelona, edited by Francesc Rogent, commented that Sagnier had been able to express himself freely, without the pressure that a client might have exerted. Hence, we see that he took Gothic ornamental elements and combined them in an original way. The construction was carried out by the respected builder Josep Barba, who had often worked with Sagnier; as for the sculptures, notable are the medallions in the crowning pierced parapet, attributable to Francesc Pastor, and the image of the Immaculate Conception on the corner of Passatge de la Concepció, a work by Josep Llimona. In 1906 the tribune was added to the first floor.
A tribune with tall windows dominated the two floors above. Enric Sagnier had his architectural studio here and here he organised his numerous activities: we can imagine the constant stream of visits by clients, the feverish work of many assistants and the busy meetings with builders, craftsmen and other contractors. Unfortunately, as far as we know there are no photographs of the interior at this time, with the exception of the well known one by Francesc Serra showing Sagnier at his desk, with a blackboard behind with sketches of a facade and a column from the church on Tibidabo.
