House Rupert Garriga Nogués
This house, commissioned by the banker Garriga-Nogués at the turn of the century, is fully integrated into the fabric of the Eixample district which, at that time, was in the process of rapid expansion. Its central location, next to the Rambla de Catalunya and Gran Via, is in the heart of that much-sought-after area known now as Barcelona’s “Golden Square”, or Quadrat d’Or, where middle-class people reside and make their property investments and where some of the most outstanding architectural examples of Modernisme are to be found.
The building, like many of its type, has commercial establishments on the ground floor, a main floor for the owner’s residence, reached by a grand staircase under a covered light well, and apartments for rent on the other floors with their own staircase and often smaller in size with, for example, two apartments on the same floor. Given its appearance the Garriga-Nogués house might be thought to be a one-family mansion. The balcony over the entrance is supported by four large consoles, symbolically depicting the Ages of Man, sculpted by Eusebi Arnau. An unusual feature is the annex on the ground and first floors which leaves a lateral facade visible. This annex housed the main floor’s billiard room and it has an interesting stained-glass window made by the Antoni Rigalt company, which was also responsible for the building’s other stained glass. Seen from inside, and this is especially true of those for the main floor, they are of great decorative richness.
